Lionel Messi’s 600th Career Goal Boosts Barcelona’s Hopes Of A 25th La Liga Trophy

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid meet as both teams are separated by only five points. A win for Barcelona would boost their chances for another La Liga title whilst Atletico Madrid were looking to close the gap by two points.

The home side started the game the better side in the opening quarter of the half. In the 12th minute, Luis Suarez was fouled on the edge of 18-yard box but Lionel Messi’s free-kick was blocked.

In the 20th minute, Lionel Messi somehow managed to find his way past three Atletico Madrid defenders and get his shot across but it was comfortably saved by Jan Oblak.

However, six minutes later, Barcelona managed to break the deadlock and who else but Lionel Messi. Messi was fouled on the edge of the box and his sublime free-kick put the hosts 1-0 up against Atletico Madrid. The goal was also Messi’s 600th career goal.

Atletico Madrid were withstanding the pressure by Barcelona as they mounted attack after attack. Philippe Coutinho’s powerful left foot effort was saved by Oblak as he kept them in the game.

The half time whistle blew and it was Messi’s free-kick that separated both teams.

The home side started the second half the better side and they nearly got a second through Messi. Gimenez had fouled Rakitic on the edge of the 18-yard box and his free-kick was blocked.

20 minutes into the second half and Atletico Madrid seemed to have found momentum as they kept on attacking Barcelona’s defence. Despite having one shot on target, Atletico had yet to test Ter Stegen as they trail 1-0.

The game was nearly over in the 77th minute as Jan Oblak made a brilliant save to deny Sergio Busquets from putting Barcelona 2-0 up. Just moments before, Luis Suarez had a goal disallowed as Barcelona try to find a way to finish the game off.

With less than five minutes to go, Atletico Madrid thought they had an equaliser as Kevin Gamerio slammed the ball into the net but it was disallowed as Diego Costa was in an offside position.

In the end, Barcelona were too strong for Atletico Madrid as they couldn’t find a way to breakthrough. The win extends their lead to eight points at the top of the table
