West Ham have announced they have signed Portuguese midfielder Joao Mario on loan from Inter Milan.
The former Sporting Club De Portugal midfielder signed for Inter Milan in August 2015 for £35m but has yet to make an impact in Serie A having made 47 appearances and scoring three goals in all competitions.
The 25 year old was a part of the Portuguese national squad that won Euro 2016 and there is no doubt that his abilities will help West Ham throughout the course of the season.
Having played in Liga NOS and Serie A, manager David Moyes has admitted he needs the midfielder to adapt quickly to the Premier League.
“My biggest concern is not him as a footballer but getting used to the Premier League, the speed and competitiveness compared to Italy or Portugal.”
“His ability as a footballer is not in question, he’s proved it, and I just hope he can hit the ground running. That’s my only concern.”
On his move to West Ham:
“I am really happy to be here,” said the new No18. “It’s a really amazing experience to join this amazing team and I am just glad to be here.
“It was a fast move. I have spoken with everyone around the team and, for me, it is exciting to play in the Premier League. I spoke with the coach and for me, I am really happy to be training for an amazing coach, also.”
Joao Mario will be wearing the number 18 shirt and has been named in David Moyes’ squad for Saturday’s FA Cup clash against Wigan Athletic
