FA Cup 3rd Round
It’s a Merseyside derby in the 3rd round of the FA Cup as Everton travel to Anfield to face Liverpool in an afternoon clash.
Sadio Mane is set to start for Liverpool after travelling from Ghana for the CAF Player of the Year awards late last night whilst a debut appearance for £75m signing Virgil Van Dijk is expected.
Philippe Coutinho will miss the fixture as his future with the club is still ongoing after reports of an incoming bid from Barcelona in the region of £140m. Meanwhile, top scorer Mohamed Salah will also miss the clash with a groin injury.
Ross Barkley is nearing a return from a hamstring injury for Everton although his future is also in doubt with Chelsea expected to make a bid for him.
They will also be without Leighton Baines, Ramiro Funes Mori and Seamus Coleman as they remain sidelined with injuries.
This will be the second clash between the two sides this season with the first encounter resulting in a draw at Anfield with Salah and Rooney scoring for their respective sides.
Liverpool are on their joint-longest unbeaten run against Everton in all competitions, 15 games, (set between March 1972 and April 1978).
This will be the 24th meeting between these two Merseyside rivals in the FA Cup, Liverpool winning 10 and drawing six (L7) – however, they haven’t met in the third round since 1931/32.
The last meeting between Liverpool and Everton in the FA Cup was a semi-final at Wembley in 2012, Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll scoring the goals for the Reds.
Liverpool haven’t failed to progress beyond the third round since January 2011, losing 0-1 to Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Everton have been knocked out of this stage twice in the last three seasons, both coming against Premier League opponents.
